"The effect of color on human beings and lives is a vital, dynamic force, which cannot be ignored."

Suzanne Caygill

Suzanne Caygill(1911 - 1994) is widely recognized as the founder of color analysis in the United States. Suzanne had a profound empirical and theoretical knowledge of color theory which she taught in seminars and later in her "Academy of Colors".

Long before the era of "Color me beautiful" in the eighties that popularized 'getting-your-colors-done', Suzanne Caygill had developed the "Caygill Method of Color Analysis" and from the forties throughout the eighties she designed personalized color palettes for her thousands of clients all over the country.

She had agents in various cities and would travel the country with hundreds of boxes of color samples that she would use in the construction of individualized color palettes.

4 original palettes from Suzanne

A palette by Suzanne always included advice on textures, patterns and metals. Suzanne strongly believed that there is a correspondence in quality between a persons personal coloring as seen in their skin tone, hair and eye colors, the colors of a season (spring, summer, autumn, winter), basic aspects of personality and form, shape, textures and patterns that could be observed in a person. In the words of Rochele H.C. Hirsch, a student and business partner of Suzanne:

"Suzanne did not create a 'spring-palette' for a person, but rather, she created a palette for a spring-person"

Palettes were fully individualized, in the sense that two spring persons could have vastly different palettes. However, the basic quality of the season would be the same. For spring that basic quality is: clear, for summer: muted, for autumn: somber-rich and for winter: sharp.

Over the course of her practice she would develop various subtypes per season. In her book "Color the Essence of You", she descibes:

Spring

Early Spring, Floral Spring, Golden Spring and Vital Spring

Summer

Iridescent Summer, Rose Summer, Jewel Tone Summer, Dusky Summer and Twilight Summer

Autumn

Metallic Autumn, Bronze Autumn, Tawny Autumn and Mellow Autumn

Winter

Classic Winter, Soft Winter, Patrician Winter, Dynamic Winter and Exotic Winter.

However, even within the subseasons, no two palettes would be the same.

And in that way, Suzanne Caygill was far, far ahead of her time, recognizing the individual qualities per person.
